So if you're keeping a scorecard for 2012:
The Indians' Fausto Carmona is now Roberto Heredia. Marlins pitcher Leo Nunez is Juan Carlos Oviedo. And the Marlins' Mike Stanton is now Giancarlo Stanton.
Unlike the first two, there are no false records in the Stanton case -- he just wants to go back to his given first name after being called Mike throughout his baseball career.
Stanton's official name is Giancarlo Cruz Michael Stanton. According to an Associated Press story, his mother calls him Cruz, and his father calls him Mike. He went by Giancarlo in grade school, but nobody could pronounce it. (It's JEE-ahn-cahr-loh.)
"I respond to many names," he said in the AP story. "It's all good."
So is Stanton - he could be poised for a breakout season in the Marlins' reconfigured lineup. He hit 34 homers with 87 RBI last season, and now has Jose Reyes getting on base in front of him.
