Unlucky Reds throw away 85 million on Madson

The St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series despite a catastrophic pitching injury in spring training last season. One of their division rivals will hope to buck those odds in the same fashion.

Ryan Madson, who signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract before the season with the Cincinnati Reds, perhaps won't ever wear their uniform in an official game. Madson, 31, will miss the 2012 season after he undergoes Tommy John ligament transplant surgery on his pitching elbow.

He was feeling a little bit of pain in the elbow last week, threw a simulated game on Tuesday, and the MRI showed he'll need the reconstructive surgery that's already claimed the season of the Royals' Joakim Soria as well.

"I was shocked at first," Madson said Sunday to MLB.com. "I was not expecting that at all, that result. It took me a couple of hours to get over it really. I was very apologetic to the Reds organization and my teammates. I feel like I let them down a little bit."

The new Reds closer will likely be Sean Marshall, who has seven career saves, five of which came last year with the Cubs. Aroldis Chapman could get a look down the road, and both should be more attractive as fantasy options as relief pitchers.
