After 8,020 games, the New York Mets finally have a no-hitter on their resume. (In case you're wondering, the San Diego Padres are now on the clock - the only current team without a no-hitter. They've played 6,895 games without one.)
What people are saying about Johan Santana's 134-pitch gem on Friday night at Citi Field against the St. Louis Cardinals:
- "NO-HITTER: Santana throws gem with help of missed call - headline in St. Louis Post-Dispatch (referring to what looked like a missed call on a hit down the line by former teammate Carlos Beltran in the sixth inning)
- "You know what, when things are meant to happen, they're gonna happen. So, you know, it was in front of our face, he saw it foul. I thought it was a fair ball, but at the end of the day, you know that one hit wasn't gonna make any difference in the ballgame." - Beltran, to the New York Daily News
- "I saw the ball hitting outside the line, just foul." -Third base umpire Adrian Johnson, to a pool reporter
- "That was awesome. Short of Tom Seaver, I can't think of a better person to pitch the first one. Just the type of guy he is, the type of person he is and just what he's been through the last year or so, to come back and have that performance, that was incredible and I was glad I was able to be a part of that." - Mets third baseman David Wright, to ESPN.com
- "It's an honor to be able to make a play for Johan. Ultimately it's his night, he was incredible tonight and he just start to finish had it all working. What a a great night for him and the Mets." - Mets outfielder Mike Baxter, to ESPN.com, who made a terrific catch (and injured himself) to save the no-hitter in the seventh inning
- "At the end, he was going on pure adrenaline. We'll have to just see where he is five days from now." - Mets manager Terry Collins, on the decision not to pull Santana after he reached his designated pitch count, to the New York Post. Santana had major shoulder surgery in 2010 and missed all of 2011.
- ''What pride! Long live Venezuela!'' Venezuela president Hugo Chavez (translated), on Twitter
- "With all the emotions of everything he went through last year and even the year before, with the surgery and the rehabilitation that he goes through and the hard work that he put in just to get back on the field again, to go through all that and still be the same pitcher once the injury is over. I'm sure today he's reminiscent of everything that he went through the last couple of years." - Former Mets ace Dwight Gooden, to MLB.com. Gooden was one of many ex-Mets who threw no-hitters for other teams.
- "We did this together. I thanked them because we, as a team, made history tonight." - Santana, to the Wall Street Journal
